History
The Order of Oman (Wisam Al-Oman) was instituted following Sultan Qaboo's accession to the throne on July 23, 1970. The Order was originally conferred in 5 Classes to both civil and military personnel, however, the Order was amended in 1982 and the Honourable Order of Oman (Wisam Al-Sharif Al-Oman) was added as a Special Class.
The I Class Grand Cordon is conferred as the second highest Class of the Order, following the Special Class. The Grand Cordon is worn from a riband with a Breast Star. It is uncertain if the Grand Cordon is worn from a sash.
There are 2 versions of the Grand Cordon which vary by design according to service recognized. Grand Cordons awarded in recognition of civil service feature a design of a crescent moon while Grand Cordons awarded for military service feature a design of the Oman emblem on the obverse. The Grand Cordon may also vary by enamel design; with Badges awarded to civilians featuring white enamel and Badges awarded to military personnel featuring red enamel. More research is necessary to confirm.
There may be additional versions which differ by composition.
