The Order of Spitamen was established on December 16, 1996. The Order is awarded in 2 Classes as a military award and is named after one of the great heroes of Tajik history, Spitamen, the warlord of Sogdiana, who became the only army general to defeat a part of the Macedonian army.

The I Class is awarded to senior commissioned military Officers and senior commanders of Interior Ministry Forces in recognition of outstanding performance in leading troops, maintaining a high degree of operational readiness, organizing and ensuring the nation's defence capacity, protecting public safety, and for maintaining the social order of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The I Class features a ribbon rosette.
