The Bravery Medal was instituted on 14 February 1975 and is awarded to civilians and military personnel in non-warlike conditions for acts of bravery in perilous situations. The Australian honours system has four bravery awards and the Bravery Medal is ranked third. It has been awarded 1,240 times.

The obverse of the medal features the Commonwealth crest and shield with the Federation Star above it. The Crown of St. Edward surmounts the medal. The medal ribbon is attached to a bar that is inscribed ‘FOR BRAVERY’.

Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters BM.
