History

The Centenary Medal was instituted in 2001 and is is conferred upon all Australian citizens who were born on or before December 31, 1901 and also to those who contributed to the success of Australia's first 100 years as a nation, including government and judicial officials The Medal was established as a means to recognize the generation and individuals who shaped Australian society and culture.

The Medal for Centenarians is more valuable than the medal issued to those who made contributions to the nation. A total of 15,841 medals were issued and only 1,400 were issued to Centenarians.

The obverse of the medal features the Federation Star with seven points, which represent the Australian states and territories. The centre of the star has an indigenous design and the interior circumference of the medal is decorated with 100 dots, representing Australia’s 100 years as a nation. The reverse of the medal features the outline of a sun and the inscription ‘FOR CONTRIBUTION MADE TO AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY’ around the interior rim.
