The New Zealand Prison Service Medal was established by Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand by Royal Warrant on October 15, 1981. It was created to recognise 14 years of custodial or supervisory prison service.

Clasps are awarded for each additional 7 years served. For each clasp, a silver star is added to the ribbon when worn alone.

The Silver Medal features the recipient’s name engraved on the rim.
