History
The Cross of Medical Service Medal is the second highest medal awarded by Papua New Guinea. It was instituted along with the Orders of Papua New Guinea by Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea by the National Honours System on August 23, 2005 (the 30th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence). The Papua New Guinea Honours System was created to nationally recognise outstanding contributions made in service of the state. The new Honours System is administered alongside with the British Imperial Honours System.
The Silver Cross is conferred upon citizens, or foreigners by an Honorary Award, to recognise 3 years or more of distinguished or meritorious service to the community or State.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters CMS.
