The Matlietoa Cross was instituted by the Legislative Assembly of Samoa by the Honours and Awards Act on August 25, 1999. It is conferred upon citizens, or foreigners in the form of an Honorary Award, in recognition of acts of the greatest heroism and bravery which involves self-sacrifice during dangerous circumstances. It may also be awarded post-humorously.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters MC.
The award is accompanied by a certificate, a miniature version of the medal and ribbon, and a monetary payment of $2000.00.
