The Order of Samoa was instituted by the Legislative Assembly of Samoa by the Honours and Awards Act on August 25, 1999. The Order of Samoa (I Class) is conferred upon Samoan citizens, or foreigners in the form of an Honorary Award, in recognition of national or international outstanding contributions made to the people, life or culture of the State.
Membership is limited to 10 living members. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters OS.
The award is accompanied with a certificate and a miniature version of the medal and ribbon.
