This cross was instituted during the reign of Alexander I in commemoration of the conclusion of the campaign against the Napoleonic forces.

There are many different variations in the size of this cross.

The reverse inscription translates to, "Not Unto Us, not Unto Us, But in Thy Name", a verse taken from Psalm 115.
