Tunisia


The Republic of Tunisia is a country in North Africa. It is bounded by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. The capital and largest city is Tunis. The estimated population of Tunisia is 11,4 million. The official languages are Tunisian Arabic, Berber and French.

Some history facts - Tunisia was a Ottoman Empire between 1534 and 1574 and stayed it for over three hundred years. In 1881 French troops occupied the country. Tunisia gained independence with Habib Bourguiba and declared the Tunisian Republic in 1957. After that, from 1956 to 2011 it was consistently authoritarian ruled by the unitary party Neo Destour / RCD. In the course of the revolution, a Constituent Assembly was elected, which adopted a new constitution in 2014. The country has only ever had two presidents.

Tunisia is a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic. It has a growing, diverse economy that is focused on agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing.

Tunisia has an army consisting of 27,000 men in 2002, a navy of 4,500 men and an air force of 3,500 men. In addition, there is a paramilitary National Guard, which includes 12,000 men.

The Order of 7th November was the highest title.
