This star was conferred upon Senior Officers of the South African Railways in recognition of distinguished leadership or meritorious service.

The South African Railways Police was established in 1916 and assimilated into the South African Police in January 1986; therefore, South African Railways Police decorations and medals became discontinued in 1986.
