The Sultan of Zanzibar Campaign Medal was instituted by Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwani in 1896.

The medal was awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the Sultan's armed forces.

The Clasps were awarded for specific battles and campaigns, including Pumwani, Jongeni, Takaungu and Mwele.
