Peru, Republic. An Order of Merit of the National Police of Peru, Grand Cross Star, c.1995
(Orden al Mérito de la Policía Nacional de Perú). Instituted in 1990. Four-piece construction, insignia in bronze gilt with red, white, blue and green enamels, the insignia with six inlaid glass stones, mounted to a base in bronze gilt incorporating a cross in white enamels with silvered trim on its edges, emanating rays between each arm of the cross, unmarked, measuring 80.5 mm (w) x 80.5 mm (h), vertical pinback, intact enamels, extremely fine.
The Order of Merit of the National Guard and Police (Orden al Mérito de la Guardia Civil y la Policia) was firstly established as the Crosses of the Police Merit in 1945. The Crosses were promoted to Order on May 31, 1950.
The Order was awarded to members of the Police, Civil Guard and citizens, both Peruvian and foreigners, in recognition of outstanding action and meritorious service to improve the institutions of the Police and Civil Guard.
The Order was awarded with eight grades. The Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight were granted to the highest ranks with in the institutions, while the I Class Cross, II Class Cross, and III Class Cross were conferred upon enlisted men.
The Order was disbanded in 1988 when the Civil Guard was merged into the National Police.
