Being the first Order established in Guatemala, the Order of the Quetzal was instituted on April 21, 1936. It was named in honor of the Guatemala's national bird, the Quetzal, which inhabits the country's volcanoes, and it was a sacred figure for the indigenous people who previously inhabited the country. This Order is Guatemala's highest official award.
It is currently conferred upon nationals and foreign officials, organizations and other individuals in recognition of outstanding civic, artistic, humanitarian or scientific services to the country. It is awarded with six grades; Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The Commander was added in 1941, while the Grand Cross and Knight were added in 1951.
