The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was instituted in 1995 by the Saskatchewan Legislature and presented by the Lieutenant-Governor of the province to recognize individuals that have provided outstanding volunteer service or community involvement.
All current and former residents are eligible to receive the Medal, with the exception of active members of office. Any individual, group, or organization may nominate someone; the only requirement is that the individual has made a significant contribution to Saskatchewan through volunteer work.
The obverse features the Saskatchewan Shield of Arms in red, green, black and white enamels. It is inscribed with [NOS IPSOS DEDIMUS] (meaning "We give of ourselves") and [SASKATCHEWAN].
Recipients are presented with a lapel pin featuring the Saskatchewan Shield of Arms with a "V."
A maximum of 10 medals are presented each year.
The first recipients received their medals in March 1996. The Medal was granted status in the Official Precedence of Canadian Orders, Decorations, and Medals on April 2, 1998.
Posthumous awards are not made.
