This Order was primarily conferred by the Cuban Government in recognition of special naval merit.

When the Order was awarded to recognize other services the colour of the cross' enamel and ribbon change.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Naval Merit, the cross and the ribbon are Dark Blue.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Bravery in Combat, the cross and the ribbon are Purple.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Humanitarian Acts, the cross and the ribbon are Half Red and Half White.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Good Conduct, the cross and the ribbon are Blue.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Continuous Service, the cross and the ribbon are Half Blue and Half White.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Special Services, the cross and the ribbon are Green.

When the Order is awarded to recognize Other Services, the cross and the ribbon are White.
