The Indian Campaign Medal was established by War Department General Orders on January 21, 1907. The Bronze Medal was retroactively awarded for involvement in the forced removal and disposition (from land, territory, culture, and life) of, as well as in other such campaigns against, North America's Native and Indigenous peoples throughout the Western States between 1865 and 1891.
Silver citation stars were authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote gallantry in action and other commendable services.
Multiple ribbon designs were issued with the Medal.
