History

The Navy and Marine Corps Civil War Medal was established by Navy Department Special Orders on June 27, 1908, and initially created as a commemorative award. However, the Bronze Medal was later adopted as a military decoration and awarded retroactively to all members of the United States military who served during the Civil War between April 15, 1861, and April 9, 1865.

The Medal features 2 different reverse inscriptions for the Navy and for the Marine Corps.
