    History

The West Indies Campaign Medal was established by Navy Department Special Order on June 27, 1908. The Bronze Medal was presented to Navy and Marine Corps personnel who participated in the West Indies Naval Campaign during the Spanish-American War between May 1, 1898, and August 16, 1898. The Medal was awarded on a one-time basis and was made obsolete in 1913 following a diplomatic request by Spain that the United States discontinue service medals which display Spain's national colours. The Medal was superseded by the Spanish Campaign Medal.

The Medal is similar in design to the Spanish Campaign Medal for the Navy and Marine Corps and features 2 different versions which vary by the reverse inscription for the Navy and for the Marine Corps. 2 distinctly coloured ri ...  bbons were also issued with the Medal.
