History

The Navy Cross was established by Act of Congress on February 4, 1919. The Cross originally rewarded acts of extraordinary heroism or distinguished service in both combatant and non-combatant situations that did not merit the award of a Medal of Honor or Distinguished Service Medal. However, in 1942, the award of the Cross was restricted to strictly acts of combat heroism which were performed in the presence of great danger or a great personal risk. Acts of combat heroism demonstrated against an enemy of the State, in military operations involving conflict with an opposing force, and during service with allied nations who are engaged in armed conflict in which the United States is not a belligerent party may be recognized by the award of the Cross. Members serving the United States Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps in any capacity are eligible for the award. Citizens and foreign nationals are also eligible for the award. It is estimated that over 6 300 awards of the Cross were made.

The Cross may also be awarded posthumously.

Additional awards of the Navy Cross are denoted by a gold star worn on the ribbon.

There are additional versions of the Cross which vary by composition. There may be additional versions of the Cross not featured here.
