The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a country in South Asia. It is surrounded by India, Afghanistan, Iran and China. Pakistan is the world’s sixth-most populous country with a population of more than 212 million people. The name Pakistan means ‘land of the pure’ in Persian and Urdu. The capital is Islamabad. Islamabad officially became the capital of Pakistan on 14 August 1967, exactly 20 years after the country’s independence. The official languages are English and Urdu.

At the same time it has nuclear weapons and has the sixth largest army in the world.
The nation of Pakistan is a modern creation, but people have been building great cities in the area for some 5,000 years.

On 14 August 1947 began the history of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, because Pakistan gained independence from Great Britain, following the Pakistan Movement and the partition of British India.
