Third Period (1873-1941). Rattanakosin Kingdom. A highly attractive and impressive order consisting of a 16 pointed silver gilt star, with well executed red, white and blue enamels, a superb hand painted centre elephant, unmarked but exhibiting the qualities of fine French manufacture, measuring 70 mm (Diameter), with typical French style pin assembly, minor enamel loss evident to blue enamels, very fine.
Footnote: The Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant is the most awarded order of Thailand. It was established in 1861 by King Rama IV of the Kingdom of Siam.
The Order was created by King Mongkut, and may be conferred upon national and foreign citizens for extraordinary civil and military service to the Kingdom of Thailand. The Orders may be awarded to both men (Knight) and women (Dame).
There is a discrepancy in size between the Order grades awarded to men versus those awarded to women.
