Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in Southeastern Europe in the Balkan Peninsula with a total area of 19,741 square miles and population over 3,5 million. It is bordered by Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro and the capital and largest city is Sarajevo. The official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.
The Banate of Bosnia was establishe in the 12th century and evolved into the Kingdom of Bosnia 2 decades later. Afterwards it was annexed to the Ottoman Empire, under which it remained to the late 19th centuries. This is followed by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which lasted until World War I. In the interwar period, Bosnia and Herzegovina was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After World War II, it was granted full republic status in the new formed Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The republic proclaimed independence in 1992 when Yugoslavia was dissolution. Followed by the Bosnian War until late 1995.
The Order of Freedom is the highest honour currently awarded in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is conferred upon individuals in recognition of outstanding contributions to freedom and human rights, for developing unity and trust between the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and for significant contributions to strengthening democratic relations. The award was was established in 1994.
