Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia was a country in Southeastern and Central Europe.

After World War I in 1918 started the country to exist under the name of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovene. The kingdom was international recognition on July 13, 1922. On October 3, 1929 the official name changed to Yugoslavia. In 1941, Yugoslavia was invaded by the Axis powers. In 1945, the monarchy was subsequently abolished. One year later, a communist government was established and Yugoslavia was renamed the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1963, the country was renamed again, as the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The six constituent republics were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. After an economic and political crisis in the 1980s and the rise of nationalism, Yugoslavia broke up, at first in five countries, leading to the Yugoslav Wars. After the breakup, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro was formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In 2003 it was renamed to State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. In 2006, the Union peacefully broke up when Serbia and Montenegro became independent states. Kosovo proclaimed its independence from Serbia in 2008.

Order of the Yugoslav Star was founded on February 1, 1954 and was the highest National order of merit in Yugoslavia and the second highest in Serbia and Montenegro. The order was mostly awarded to foreign heads of state for the development and strengthening of peace and cooperation between nations.
