This Medal was instituted by Umberto I and it was conferred upon military personnel and civilians, including colonial troops, who had participated in the Italian campaigns in Africa.
In 1937 the Medal was officially replaced by the Commemorative Medal for Military Campaigns in East Africa.
The ribbon may be decorated with silver clasps associated denoting the specific campaigns in which the recipient served.
