History

This Medal was instituted by Umberto I and it was conferred upon military personnel and civilians, including colonial troops, who had participated in the Italian campaigns in Africa.

In 1937 the Medal was officially replaced by the Commemorative Medal for Military Campaigns in East Africa.

Known clasps include "SPEDIZIONE 1887," "SAATI 1887," "DOGALI 1887," "CAMPAGNA D. AFRICA 1887-88," "CAMPAGNA D. AFRICE 1887," "CHEREN 1889," "ASMARA 1889," "ADUA 1890," "AGORDAT I 1890," "AGORDAT I," "HALAT 1891," "SEROBETI 1891," "AGORDAT II 1893," "AGORDAT II," "CASSALA 1894," "KASSALA 1894," "HALAT 1894," "COATIT 1895," "LAFOLE 1896," "CAMPAGNA D. The addition of clasps to the ribbon may increase the overall price of a medal.
