This Medal is an honourary award that was founded by Victor Emmanuel III. It was conferred upon the mother of soldiers who were killed in action.
The Medal was originally meant to demonstrate the nation's gratitude for the lives lost during the First World War. It was later extended to reward mothers of lost soldiers who served in the Africa Campaign 1935-1936, the Spanish Campaign 1938, the Expeditionary Corps in Albania 1940, and in the Second World War.
