The Medal for Loyalty to the King and Homeland was created in Portugal on June 24, 1823, and it was approved on September 29 of the same year. It was founded to reward the military personnel who participated of the overthrown of the 1820-1823 constitutional monarchy.

The Medal was awarded with two grades based on the rank of the recipient; Gold Medal was awarded to General Officers, while the Silver Medal was awarded to Inferiors Officers.

The Medal is also known as; Medal of the King's Rights Restoration, Medal of Villa Francada; and Medal of Poeira (contemptuously).

There are known several versions that differ on their designs.

The Gold Medal was awarded 2500 times.
