A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse bears two busts and the inscription M. CHRIST. HISP. REG. CATH. PIETATE AC PRUDENTIA EXIMIAE MATRI DELECTAE, the reverse bears the coat of arms of Spain, with laurel leaves and the inscription 1885 1902 / FORTITUDO ET DECOR INDUMENTIUME US, on a dark blue and red striped ribbon.
The Lady Maria Cristina Medal was established by Royal Order on May 16, 1903 in commemoration of the regency of Queen Maria Cristina of Habsburg . it was also awarded to people who displayed meritorious acts during her reign.
Queen Maria Cristina was the second wife of Alfonso XII, King of Spain. She became ruler of Spain after Alfonso XII died on November 25, 1885. She ruled until the birth of their son, Alfonso XIII, on May 17, 1886. She maintained a joint rule with her son until he attained his majority in 1902. During her reign, she gained a reputation as being well-balanced and respectful.
