Consisting of two crossed rifles with bayonets with ornamental curled attachments, with swords and a grenade between the sword handles, the center bears a circular medallion with the inscription HUESCA encompassed by a border inscribed with ESPEDICION REAL, the reverse bears the inscription 1837 24 DE MAYO, with an ornate suspension of a laurel wreath with two standards and the monogram CV in the center, on a green ribbon with two purple stripes.
The medal was conferred for participation in the Battle of Huesca. The Battle of Huesca took place on May 24, 1837 during the First Carlist War. The French Foreign Legion suffered heavy casualties resulting in the victory of the Carlists.
