The Medal of Honor was instituted by Queen Isabel II of Spain in 1858 in recognition of daring and heroic rescues of Spanish Vessels by foreign sailors.
The Gold Medal was suppressed and replaced by the Bronze Medal in 1888.
The Bronze Medal was added as a grade in 1888.
