The Cross for the Defenders of Tarifa was authorized in Spain by King Ferdinand VII on June 4, 1815. It was conferred upon members of the 4th Army, including the Navy force, who participated in the defense of the city of Tarifa against French forces on December, 1811.

The Gold Cross was conferred upon Generals and Officers, while the Silver Cross was conferred upon the troops.

The Cross is known as well as the Cross for the Fourth Army.

The Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "For the Defenders of Tarifa," and a reverse inscription that stands to "Fourth Army."
