At the outbreak of the First World War, chaplains were stationed in every battalion of the Belgian Army. These crosses were the only means of identification for chaplains until a unique khaki uniform was introduced on November 15, 1915.
Catholic chaplains wore a red and black enamelled Latin cross, while Protestant chaplains wore a white enamelled Maltese cross.
