History

On January 24, 1919 all Allied countries agreed to manufacture a “Victory Medal” for the Great War. The Medals were required to be made of bronze, 36 mm in diameter, suspended from a double rainbow ribbon, and depict the symbol of Victory with the inscription “The Great War for Civilization.”

The Belgian Victory Medal was awarded to all military and nursing personnel who served in the Belgian Armed Forces during the First World War between August 1, 1914 and November 11, 1918. It could also be awarded posthumously.

The reverse inscription appears in French and Dutch.

There are a number of versions which vary in manufacturer.
