History

The Volunteer Combatant Medal (1952) actually consists of a "PUGNATOR" (Combatant) clasp that was worn on the Volunteer Medal (1952). It was awarded to Belgian citizens and foreigners who volunteered in the Belgian Armed Forces and participated in active combat.

The Medal with "PUGNATOR" clasp could be awarded retroactively to veteran volunteer combatants from the First and Second World Wars, in which case they were accompanied by silvered "1914-1918" or "1940-1945" clasps. It could also be awarded posthumously, as well as to those volunteers who were gravely wounded in combat or held as prisoners of war.

The reverse inscription translates to "Volunteer."
