History

The Medal was originally called the Commemorative Medal for Operations of Security and Maintenance of Order in North Africa. Its actual name was established by the decree of January 11, 1958. It is more commonly recognized as the Commemorative Medal for North Africa.

The Medal was awarded to military personnel who served for at least 90 days in the following theatres: Tunisia (January 1, 1952-July 2, 1962), Morocco (June 1, 1953-July 2, 1962), Algeria (October 31, 1954-July 1, 1964), Sahara (October 31, 1954-July 1, 1962), and Mauritius (January 10, 1957-January 1, 1960). There are five corresponding silver nickel gilt ribbon clasps that may be worn with the medal: “ALGÉRIE” (Algeria), “TUNISIE” (Tunisia), “MAROC” (Morocco), “SAHARA,” “MAURITANIE” (Mauritius).

There are two versions of the medal that vary in inscription according to the official name of the Medal. The first version has a revers inscription that translates to “Commemorative Medal for North Africa,” and the reverse has a reverse inscription that translates to “Commemorative Medal for Operations of Security and Maintenance of Order.” Both versions have an obverse inscription that translates to “French Republic.”

There are additional versions that vary in size and composition.

It is uncertain if this Medal has ceased to be awarded.
