The competition for the Best French Craftsman is a prestigious competition in France that rewards professionals of a variety of trades. It is held every four years. In the competition, the candidate is given a time limit and basic materials to create a masterful example of work in their chosen trade. The list of specialties is not fixed and includes such crafts as carpentry, chocolate making, tailoring, gardening, and bookbinding.
The Medal of the Best French Craftsman was established in 1932, eight years after the first competition. The Silver Medal is awarded for a score close to 18 in the final competition. The Gold Medal is awarded for a score equal to, or greater than, 18.
The obverse inscription translates to “Joy, Labour, Education, Skill, To the Best Craftsmen in France.”
