History

The Medal of Honour for Octroi Officers was established on November 16, 1903, but was later replaced by the Medal of Honour for Departments and Communes in 1945. An octroi is a local tax levied on certain items upon entry to a district.

The Medal was awarded to octroi collections officers for long and faithful service. The Bronze Medal was awarded for 25 years of service and the Silver Medal was awarded for 30 years of service. On October 4, 1924 each of these service requirements was reduced by 5 years.

The obverse inscription translates to “Octroi,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Ministry of the Interior, French Republic.”
