History

The St. Mihiel Medal was created on February 15, 1936 by the Municipal Council of Saint-Mihiel. It is not an official medal of the French government, but it is widely recognized and collected.

It was awarded to the American soldiers of the 1st American Army, who along with French forces, fought at Saint Mihiel from September 12-15, 1918. Led by the American General John Pershing, they successfully attacked the Saint-Mihiel salient and helped restore communication channels between Paris and the Eastern Front.

There are different versions of the Medal. The first was manufactured by the Monnaie de Paris. There are also American manufactured variants, which are unstamped and have biconical or ring suspensions. There is another version that was manufactured by the French firm Delande. This version differs in engraving and is worn with a “ST MIHIEL” clasp.
