The Combatant’s Cross was established on June 28, 1930 and is awarded to all those with a combatant card. It has been awarded for combat in World War I, World War II, and all international conflicts in which France has deployed troops since 1945.
The Cross was also awarded by the Vichy government during the German occupation in France.
The design of the Cross was chosen in a contest open to all veterans. The winning design was submitted by Eugène-Baptiste Doumenc. The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Combatant’s Cross.”
The Cross may still be awarded today.
