The Long Service Bars were established by Prince Georg Wilhelm in 1850 and were conferred upon non-commissioned officers and soldiers who rendered long and faithful military service. When calculating the number of years served, war years counted for double.
The I Class Gold Bar was conferred for 21 years of service.
In 1913, the service years required for a the I Class award were reduced to 15.
