The Bravery Medal was originally instituted by Duke Friedrich August I with the aim of encouraging military enlistment.
It was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men for demonstrating outstanding bravery in combat.
The recipients could be citizens of Nassau or foreign citizens.
The Type III Medals were issued under Duke Adolph of Nassau, and they were conferred upon individuals who had participated in the Battle of Eckernförde or had served in Baden during the German revolutions of 1848-1849.
