History

The Red Cross Decoration was founded by King Wilhelm II following the suggestion of his wife, Queen Augusta Victoria.

The decoration was conferred upon men and women who had rendered exceptional service in the care of the sick and wounded during times of peace and war.

The decoration featured three grades, and in order to be awarded the I Class Cross, the recipient had to have already received one of the lower award grades.

The I Class Cross was worn as a brooch on the breast.

After five years of service, recipients were eligible to receive the next class of the medal.

Clasps for the medals were created in 1901 to recognize war service. These clasps included: "SÜDAFRIKA 1899-1900", "OSTASIEN 1900/01", "SÜDWESTAFRIKA 1904/06", "CHARBIN 1904/05", "PEKING".
