History

The Campaign Medal for 1849 was founded by Duke Ernst I on April 17, 1874. The medal was conferred upon all military personnel who participated in the Danish-German War and rendered exceptional service during critical events such as the storming of Dybbøl Hill on April 13, 1849.

The medal was awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers, military doctors, and enlisted ranks of the Altenburger contingent.
