A Maltese cross, constructed of silver, gold, and diamonds. The cross is in silver and adorned with diamonds. The obverse centre medallion is enamelled in white and features a green enamelled cross pattée, surrounded by two green enamelled laurel branches forming a closed wreath. This is surrounded by an inscription wreath in dark green enamel with the golden inscription ‘DEO. PRINCIPI. LEGI.’ (for God, duke, and justice’). The ring’s outer border is adorned with diamonds. The reverse is silver and smooth with a vertical pinback. This version was awarded between 1802 and 1805.
As of 1805, the design changed to a silver Maltese cross with scaled arms and narrow smooth borders. The tips of the arms feature small eyelets to sew the star to the garment. The obverse centre medallion is in white enamel and features a green enamelled cross pattée with narrow golden borders. The inscription ring is in white enamel with golden borders, with the golden inscription ‘DEO. PRINCIPI. LEGI.’ (for God, duke, and justice’). The medallion ring is made of a green enamelled laurel wreath with a narrow golden border on each side. The reverse is silver and smooth.
The Order of St. Joachim was instituted by Prince Christian Franz. The purpose of the order was to aid the needy of all religious denominations.
