Brass buckle, 52.6mm x37.55mm, plain field, with SA in the circle affixed to plain brass field, unmarked, in worn condition. According to Angolia, attributed to SA Danzig during the period September 1939 to December 1939. This particular example is illustrated on page 185 of Angolia’s book.
The SA (Sturmabteilung, storm detachment) was established in 1921 as a paramilitary protection squad of the NSDAP. The members of the SA were tasked with protecting party leaders at political rallies and meetings from the paramilitary forces of the opposing political factions. The SA was first utilised on November 4, 1921 at a meeting held in Munich’s "Hofbräuhaus" beer hall. The organisation was banned after the failed putsch in 1923 and was reactivated in February 1925.
There is an unidentified SA belt buckle that has been attributed to the SA unit stationed in the city of Danzig, and used between September and December of 1939. However, this has yet to be conclusively proven. The buckle has been found in two sizes, 51x35mm and 90x48mm. It presents as a plain brass field with a nickel SA emblem soldered to it. The reverse is unmarked.
