The Volunteer Medal (1940-1945) was established by Grand Duchess Charlotte by Grand Ducal Decree on September 12, 1945. It was awarded to all Luxembourgian volunteers who served in an Allied army or participated in resistance activities during the Second World War between May 10, 1940, and May 8th, 1945. It was also awarded posthumously.
The Bronze Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Luxembourg, Virtue," and the reverse bears the names of theatres in which the recipients participated: "England, Normandy, North Africa, Italy, Rhineland, Central Europe, Belgium, Holland."
