History

The Bronze Lion was established by Royal Decree in 1944. It replaced the honourable mention clasp for the Bronze Cross and Flying Cross, as well as the bar clasp for special actions on the Cross of Merit.

It is awarded to Dutch military personnel for distinguished service and acts of bravery. It may also be awarded to civilians or foreigners, but only under exceptional circumstances. A clasp with an Arabic numeral is awarded for each subsequent citation and denotes the total number of awards received.

A total of 1212 Bronze Crosses have been awarded.

A number of firms have produced the crosses since 1944, and the different strikings may present small differences in engravings and suspension. There may be additional versions that vary in size.
