The Cross for Four Day Marches was established by the Royal Dutch League for Physical Education (Koninklijke Nederlandsche Bond Voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding) in 1909. This League was previously known as the Dutch League for Physical Education (Nederlandsche Bond voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding) until 1959.
It is awarded to Dutch civilians and military personnel who successfully complete all four days of marching in the annual event and is permitted for wear on military uniforms.
There are two models of the decoration that reflect the name change of the governing association. The first features the obverse inscription “NBVLO,” while the second features the obverse inscription “KNBLO.”
The Bronze Cross (without a crown) is awarded for the completion one march and the Bronze Cross (with crown) for two marches. The Bronze Cross (with crown) is awarded with a “3” or “4” clasp for the completion of three and four marches, respectively. From 1911-1977 these number clasps were made of gilded bronze, but they are currently made of yellow metal and enamel.
There may be additional versions of the Bronze Cross that differ in size and composition.
