History

The Java Medal was established by Royal Decree in 1831. It is recognised as the first Dutch campaign medal. It was awarded to European military personnel and native Officers for service in the Java War from 1825-1830.

There is a second version of the Bronze Medal with a surmounting oak wreath that was awarded for honourable mentions. There may be some other versions composed of gilded bronze, however, this was not an official grade and was likely done by European Officers to distinguish their medals from those of the other recipients.

Both versions feature an obverse inscription that translates to "William I, King of the Netherlands," and a reverse inscription that translates to "War on Java 1825-1830."
